  • Bit of a long-shot, but does anyone have any data/research about the relationship between student poverty concentration and school building capacity? Anecdotally, I’d imagine there is a correlation between high poverty concentration and under-capacity schools; looking for data to support/refute.

  • Interesting trend: since 1989, public schools have halved the percentage of special education students spending <80% of class time in ‘general class’ (and doubled % spending >80% time in general class).

  • I’ve been predicting LEA consolidation for years, so it’s fitting that one of the early examples I’m seeing is from my hometown county.

  • Too often, I hear complaints about K-12 financial transparency that loosely translate to: “the information wasn’t organized and presented exactly the way I wanted to consume it.”

We can debate how to present data, but let’s not conflate personal preferences with malfeasance.

  • The whole “we keep spending more money in K-12 and don’t see changes” argument is exhaustingly disingenuous. PK-12 spending has hovered around the same percentage of GPD (3-4%) for over 50 years and it’s currently the lowest (3.44%) it’s been since 1989.

  • I see people (who should know better) are making lazy arguments about NYCDOE per-pupil spending… again.

👉🏻 Staff costs drive school spending 👉🏻 More expensive places to live ➡️ higher staff costs 👉🏻 Manhattan is the most expensive place to live in the country, 130% of average

  • This proposal to gut Title I is why I’ve been raging against any premature/baseless/exaggerated claims of mismanaging ESSER funds before the grant is even finished: welcome to my nightmare.

If you’re surprised, you’re not paying attention.

  • Let’s not treat this proposal like any kind of reasonable one worth debating or rationalizing. Proposing to blindly cut 94% of Title I with no argument other than “schools got emergency money that one-time” is unserious and unfounded and we should treat it as such.

  • You want to buy a house. Your budget is $250k. “Is that enough?”

Maybe. Are you trying to buy a cabin in West Virginia or a brownstone in Park Slope?

This is what the “does money matter?” debate in PK-12 education sounds like.

    Is it enough? For what?

  • I’m excited about this. Private-ish photo-sharing for close friends and family is something I’ve been craving. Path was ahead of its time and I’ve been waiting for something similar to revive the concept.
